FLYING PERMIT REQUIREMENTS:

1) A current AMA (Academy of Model Aeronautics) membership.

2) A current HHAMS (Hempstead Harbor Aero Modelers Society) membership.

3) A Notarized Indemnity Agreement.

From the Chief Safety Officer

The North Hempstead Aerodrome is sanctioned by the Academy of Model Aeronautics (AMA), and as such, we observe a strict safety code which has been refined over many years of aero modeling.  Our dedicated, voluntary Safety Officers are responsible for opening and closing the field each day, and they monitor all flying activities and participants to be sure the rules are understood and obeyed.  It is because of this dedication that our safety record has been unblemished over 35 years of flying at this site.

But it is more than monitoring that makes this field safe.  Within our group of Safety Officers, there are a smaller number who have accepted the responsibility of being Flight Examiners.  Each new pilot is considered a Novice.  A Novice Pilot must have a more experienced Senior Pilot train him and stand next to him during every flight until he has shown the ability to safely control his aircraft without assistance.  The Senior Pilot is there to guide, but can also take over in the event the Novice needs help.  After the training period is completed, flight tests are given by two separate Examiners.  Successful pilots then have earned their Senior Pilot’s permit and can fly solo when the field is open and a Safety Officer is present.

It is because of these procedures and this perfectly positioned flying field that we are able to enjoy this great hobby so close to home.  We welcome you to come and have a look and join us if you have an interest in flying.
